Garmin announced two new budget series today, the nuvi 2200 and 2300 product lines. Both come equipped with multi-destination routing, as well as the trafficTrends (historical road speed database) and myTrends features recently introduced on the nuvi 3700 series. The 2200 series will will utilize a 3.5” touchscreen, while the 2300 series will have a 4.3” screen and allow users to “preview multiple routes.” Models with an LT designation...

Wow, where did the summer go? Sad to say, it’s September already, but that means it’s time to look back on the most popular reviews on GPS Tracklog . And the chart clearly indicates that bundling PNDs with lifetime traffic and maps is an effective marketing strategy, as a couple of TomTom TM units climb into the number 2 and 4 spots. Not only that, but 5” screens have a lock on the top four slots too. I have to admit, I didn’t see that...

I started seeing reports recently that the Garmin nuvi 3700 series will learn your preferred route, once you have deviated from a suggested route several times. I’m a bit surprised that Garmin didn’t hype this aspect of their myTrends feature, but they seem to take a low key approach and not highlight some features (like the fact that your nuvi takes into account your driving habits when calculating your ETA). As far as I know, the 3700...

Okay, I try not to double up on the deal posts too often, but this one is too good not to post here and on my GPS deals site. REI.com has Garmin Oregon 450 on sale for $249.99 through September 6. That’s $50 less than I’ve ever seen it before; REI members get free shipping too. This is an awesome deal on what I called “the best Oregon yet” in my Oregon 450 review . Garmin announced a new cycling GPS this morning, the Garmin Edge 800 . The big news is that this is the first touchscreen model in the Edge series. It also brings BirdsEye aerial imagery and Garmin custom map capabilities to the Edge line. I’m curious about Garmin mentioning simplified route planning through BaseCamp ; I’ve never been a fan of the Edge’s use of courses instead of tracks, although much of that may be due to my background...

Hands on with the Garmin GPSMAP 62s It’s finally here… The Garmin GPSMAP 62s brings a long-awaited update to the fabled and much-loved GPSMAP 60CSx, which has reigned supreme as the gold standard handheld GPS for more than four years. During that time, Garmin experimented with new interfaces, first with the Colorado series, and later with the Oregon and Dakota lines. These have been fine-tuned through many software updates, adding things...

Garmin has announced a voluntary recall of select nuvi 200W, 250W, 260W and 7xx units, due to possible battery overheating and fire hazard. If you have one of these models, you can enter your serial number (found on the bottom or back of the device) at https://my.garmin.com/rma/recallLanding.faces According to Garmin… …these factors can, in rare circumstances, increase the possibility of overheating, which may lead to a fire hazard. Although...

I held off on posting this in order to give the the folks at Garmin a chance to investigate the issue, but the story can now be told. As I was wrapping up my nuvi 3750 review, I had the unit connected to my computer, when Windows 7 popped up the above message. I suspect that I had improperly ejected the unit at some point, causing this. I had ran CHKDSK before on various units, with no deleterious results, so…  Read More →

Its hard to believe that half a decade has passed, but I started GPS Tracklog five years ago today. Along the way, I’ve expanded from a backcountry focus to include auto GPS, industry news, and even a bit of Android coverage (sorry iPhone fans, there’s no AT&T reception at my house). So I want to take a brief moment to say thanks to all you loyal readers out there and to post a celebratory track I recorded yesterday morning. I now have...
