Chilean Geodetic Observatory Faces Post-Quake Difficulties

March 8th, 2010 admin

The following message distributed by the International GNSS Service (IGS) is a first-hand account from Hayo Hase, who heads the Geodetic Observatory TIGO at Concepción, Chile, in the aftermath of the February 27 earthquake. The devastating magnitude 8.8 earthquake is one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded. The Geodetic Observatory TIGO has been operating since 2002, but has faced funding difficulties.

The Central and Southern Andes GPS Project (CAP) team led by Mike Bevis at Ohio State University have computed the coseismic displacement field associated with the recent M 8.8 Maule earthquake in south-central Chile. Peak measured displacement is 3.04 meters near the city of Concepcion, Chile.  Read More →
Scientists Return to Haiti to Assess Possibility of Major Quake Using GPS
A team funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) is returning to Haiti this week to investigate the cause of the January 12, magnitude 7 earthquake there. The geologists will collect crucial data, much gathered by GPS, to assess whether the quake could trigger another major event to the east or west of Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital.  Read More →

NASA Radar Images Show How Mexico Quake Deformed Earth
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jun 24, 2010 NASA has released the first-ever airborne radar images of the deformation in Earth’s surface caused by a major earthquake – the magnitude 7.2 temblor that rocked Mexico’s state of Baja California and parts of the American Southwest on April 4. The data reveal that in the area studied, the quake moved...
National Geodetic Survey Seeks Participants for Kinematic GPS Challenge
The National Geodetic Survey (NGS) is conducting a 12-year project to redefine the vertical datum of the United States. This project, referred to as GRAV-D (Gravity for the Redefinition of the American Vertical Datum), is accomplished by flying airborne gravity missions over the continental and coastal U.S. Gravity solutions require accurate sensor...
